Understanding the GRE Exam
The GRE is divided into three main sections:
Analytical Writing:
Tasks: Write two essays—an “issue task” and an “argument task.”
Duration: 60 minutes (30 minutes per task).
Verbal Reasoning:
Tasks: Evaluate written material, analyze relationships among component parts of sentences, and understand vocabulary in context.
Duration: 60 minutes (two sections of 20 questions each).
Quantitative Reasoning:
Tasks: Solve mathematical problems, interpret data, and apply basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.
Duration: 70 minutes (two sections of 20 questions each).
The GRE also includes an unscored or research section that does not affect your score. The test is scored on a scale of 130-170 for the Verbal and Quantitative sections, and 0-6 for the Analytical Writing section.
